Prior to joining the SGA, both civilian and military teaching staff spend four or more years gaining academic or military experience before being accepting at the rank of Assistant Professor or Captain. Promotion to Associate Professor or Major typically occurs after 4-6 years, with promotion to full Professor or Lieutenant Colonel taking place after another 6-8 years, at which point the staff member is placed in charge of one of the academy's Departments, such as Chemistry, History, Astronautics, Law or Meteorology. After six or so years at this rank they can expect to be promoted to the position of Distinguished Professor or Colonel, and lead one of the school's five Divisions - Basic Sciences, Humanities, Engineering, Social Sciences or Interdisciplinary. The ranks of Institute Professor or Brigadier General are reserved for the Dean of the Faculty, the most senior member of the teaching staff who answers directly to the academy Superintendent.
